We will take a look at OneNote and Evernote to find out how they compare to each other. The two applications offer options that will suit individual users as well as businesses.

Evernote and OneNote are the most recognized software solutions for taking notes and they both offer useful features for anyone who needs an easy way to keep track of information. You can write down a great idea that comes to you in a moment of inspiration, or make a list of things that you need to remember. I bet they'd get it right.Note taking applications are very practical and come handy in many situations. I wish Omnigroup would build one of these apps. Until someone manages to accomplish that, EN or the Finder with Dropbox seem to be the robust choices but without the interface we desire. It includes the superfluous (for me) handwriting and audio features.Īll they need to do is include the functionality we enjoy with the Mac Finder, TextEdit and Dropbox in a smooth, intuitive interface. pdf, combines images and formatted text, but lacks tags. rtfd, zero text formatting, no tags, sync has been problematic for me. So far Alfons Schmid's Notebooks gets close but it's not quite there, and its more expensive than anything else in the genre ($30 for both apps).

  • sync flawlessly either by dropbox, iCloud, or its own system.
  • light, fast and bullet proof- no bloatware.
  • index display options (thumbnail, title, 3 line snippet, etc.).
  • GUI layout options - sleek, intuitive interface.
  • ability to select and tag multiple notes at once.
  • folders or categories, hierarchal with drag/drop desirable.
  • import/export, create and edit universal file type such as.
  • From my perspective here's what a lighter weight notes app should do. Everyone has unique criteria for their perfect app, and I assume that's why no one has yet created the obvious replacement. It's easy enough to find apps that look good at first, but the shortcomings show up fast. I've been actively searching for a note app that's better than EN for awhile. Maybe in a few more iterations OneNote will be a real alternative to Evernote.

The Mac app is also missing some of the features that are in the Windows version. And surprisingly, I can't move sections from one notebook to another. I also can't drag stuff into OneNote like I can with Evernote. I like the additional formatting options, especially being able to place text, images, tables and other items anywhere on the page, but was disappointed to find that I can't cut and paste a mix of text and images (such as from a web page) and instead have to paste the text and add each image one-by-one. The additional organizational options in OneNote are nice, but I rely heavily on tags in Evernote and if I can't organize my notes in a similar manner then OneNote isn't going to work for me. The showstopper for me is the inability to edit the list of tags, creating new tags and removing the ones I don't want. I've been looking for an Evernote alternative, and although OneNote is the best I've found so far (for my needs, at least), it still doesn't match Evernote.
